The experiment had been set up like a recipe as we get to “cook” a leaf in boiling water to extract its chlorophyll. We have water, methylated spirits (which is alcohol) , iodine solution, a leaf and a bunsen burner.
Firstly, we boil 150ml of water in a beaker.
Then, we cook the leaf in the 100 degrees water for 2 minutes. This is supposed to break the cell structure in the leaf so the chlorophyll will be extracted and it will flow into the water.
After 2 minutes, we turned off the bunsen burner and put the leaf into 20 ml of alcohol in a 50ml beaker.
The leaf was agitated till the leaf was white (mostly).
Finally, the leaf was put into the beaker of hot water and was later put on a tile. A few drops of iodine solution was dripped onto the leaf.
The initial green part of the leaf turned from yellowish brown to blue black after dripping iodine solution. Conclusion: the leaf photosynthesized!
